2023 German Darts Championship Picks & Predictions

0

Michael van Gerwen (+275) headlines a top-quality lineup of stars at the 2023 German Darts Championship this weekend. The event gets underway on Friday, with the top seeds entering the fray on Saturday. MVG is the favorite to win the competition, and here we tell you if he is worth backing in our latest darts betting picks.

  • What; 2023 German Darts Championship
  • Where; Halle 39, Hildesheim, Germany
  • When; Friday, October 13th – Sunday, October 15th, 2023
  • Defending Champion; Michael van Gerwen

The German Darts Championship is the final event on the 2023 PDC European Tour roster. A field of 48 players will be competing for a prize pool of £175,000 (roughly $210,000), with the winner walking away with a check worth £30,000 ($36,000).

Michael van Gerwen is the defending champion. He defeated Rob Cross in the final in 2022.

Friday’s first round is made up of 32 qualifiers looking to join the 16 seeds in Saturday’s second round. Big-name stars amongst the qualifiers include Chris Dobey, Stephen Bunting, Vincent van der Voort, and Daryl Gurney.

It’s a testament to how strong the PDC now is that Chris Dobey isn’t even in the top 16 seeds. Dobey starred in the Premier League this season but is down in 32nd place in the European Tour Order of Merit. As a result, he misses out on an automatic spot.

Winner of three European Tour titles in 2023, Dave Chisnell is the top seed. He will be looking to perform well in this event to ensure he finishes the season top of the European Tour. His closest rival to the top spot is Luke Humpries, who as we all know, is in good form.

Betting to win the 2023 German Darts Championship

Michael van Gerwen leads the way with the bookmakers to win the 2023 German Darts Championship. MVG is +275 to retain the title he won last year when he defeated Rob Cross in the final.

His closest rival in the betting is Luke Humpries (+500), who has just won his first PDC Major title. Humpries is ahead of third favorite Michael Smith (+600), with European Tour Order of Merit leader Dave Chisnall (+1400) next.

Dirk van Duijvenbode and Jonny Clayton are both +1600, with last year’s beaten finalist, Rob Cross, at +1800 to go one better this time.

World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall is +2000 to add another title to his collection, and Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock, the PDC World Youth Championship winner, is at +2200.

Can MVG bounce back from World Grand Prix disappointment?

Michael van Gerwen was the big name missing from the latter stages of the World Grand Prix last weekend. MVG was defeated three sets to two by Chris Dobey in round two of an event he has won on six previous occasions.

This is the problem with MVG these days. In his defeat to Chris Dobey, he averaged just 87.02. Put simply, van Gerwen is too inconsistent. The German Championship looks like it is there for the taking for the former world champion. Gerwyn Price has withdrawn, MVG is the defending champion, and he has had a few days extra rest.

Similar to Ronnie O’Sullivan in snooker, if van Gerwen turns up and performs, he will win. But we just don’t know what we are going to get. He may well win the competition. But at odds of just +275, we are giving him a miss.

Our Picks to Win

We’re going to hedge our bets for our German Championship betting picks this weekend.

Dave Chisnell (+1400) has been the best player on the European circuit this season. The weekend format seems to suit his game down to the ground. He knows he could lose out on the top spot to Luke Humpries, so he will have extra motivation. And at +1400, he is a great price to win. So, we are making Dave Chisnell our first betting pick to win the German Championship.

We have just mentioned our second pick inadvertently, and it’s the new World Grand Prix champion, Luke Humpries. Humpries defeated Gerwyn Price 5-2 in the final last Sunday to win his first Major PDC title. As we saw with Michael Smith at the start of the year (when he won the World Championship and Bahrain Masters) and then MVG and Gerwyn Price in the Premier League, when a player gets a bit of momentum, they can go on a winning streak.

We feel it is worth backing Luke Humpries (+500), and we make him our second pick to win the German Darts Championship.
