The 2023 MotoGP season is winding down, and the battle to take home the title remains a three-man race with defending champion Francesco Bagnaia leading the way. Also in the mix are Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi. This weekend, the MotoGP riders visit the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Ventnor, Australia, for the 2023 MotoGP Guru by Gryfyn Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. Last year, Alex Rins finished the race in first place, followed by the legendary Marc Marquez. Bagnaia placed third.

MotoGP has regularly competed on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit since 1997. The course is contracted to host an annual MotoGP competition through 2026. Marquez has three wins on the track, picking up victories in 2015, 2017, and 2019. MotoGP did not visit the track in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic.

The riders enter the 2023 Australian GP coming off the recent Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia. Bagnaia won that race. Maverick Vinales and Fabio Quartararo followed him.

Francesco Bagnaia

Not long ago, Francesco Bagnaia had a 66-point lead over the MotoGP pack. That cushion made the 26-year-old Ducati rider an overwhelming favorite to repeat as the MotoGP champion. However, Bagnaia hit a rough patch between Week 11 and Week 13 of the 2023 MotoGP season. During those three weeks he did not start Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, finished third at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, and crashed out of the IndianOil Grand Prix of India. The defending champion bounced back in the two most recent races, winning Motul Grand Prix of Japan and finishing as the runner-up of the Indonesian GP.

Bagnaia currently has 346 points, which puts him 18 ahead of Jorge Martin and 63 ahead of Marco Bezzecchi. In his past two appearances at the Australian GP, Bagnaia has placed fourth and third.

Jorge Martin

Barring an enormous drop-off, Jorge Martin will have the best year of his young MotoGP career in 2023. The 25-year-old, who raced his first full season of MotoGP in 2022, finished in 9th place last year with 152 points. This year, Martin has three wins and 328 points, which puts him very close to the points leader, Francesco Bagnaia, who has 346 points.

Martin had an incredible stretch between Week 11 and Week 14 of the 2023 MotoGP season. During that stretch, he picked up two wins, a runner-up and a third-place finish. However, things went awry for Martin in Indonesia when he crashed out of the race on lap 12. Because he did not finish, Martin left the race with zero points.

Martin has raced once on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit under the MotoGP banner, finishing in seventh place in 2022.

Marco Bezzecchi

Marco Bezzecchi finished in fourth place on this course last year, his first season with MotoGP. He enters this week’s race with a fair amount of momentum. The 24-year-old has not finished lower than fifth place in the past four races. During that stretch, Bezzecchi has a win and a runner-up finish. He is coming off a fifth-place finish in Indonesia.

Bezzecchi is currently in third place in the point’s race with 283. He is a betting longshot to win the season, but he will improve on his 14th-place finish of last season. Bezzecchi has three wins this year.
