Maverick Vinales pulled off an upset victory in the most recent MotoGP race. The 29-year-old ended a run of more than three years without a win when he took first place at the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin, TX, on April 14. Vinales had betting odds of +1600 ahead of that race. The betting favorites in Austin, Jorge Martin, and Francesco Bagnaia, placed fourth and fifth in the race. This weekend, the racers are at Circuito de Jerez in Andalusia, Spain, for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix. Last year’s race on this course was won by Francesco Bagnaia, who was on his way to a second straight MotoGP world championship.

The Circuito de Jerez is 4.42 kilometers in length. The course has eight right corners and five left corners. The longest straightaway on the track checks in at 607 meters. Francesco Bagnaia holds the record for the fastest lap on the course, which he set in 2022 at 1:36:170. The defending world champ also set the best race lap record that year at 1:37:669 and qualified with the best pole time ever at 1:36:170. Johann Zarco holds the top speed record for Circuito de Jerez. He set that mark in 2021 at 300.8 Km/h.

The 2024 MotoGP season has held three races in 2024. No one has won more than one race. However, Jorge Martin, who finished in second place at the end of the 2023 MotoGP season, has been the most consistent rider this year. Martin finished third in Qatar, won in Portugal, and placed fourth in Austin. The 26-year-old is in first place in the points race with 80 points. Enea Bastianini is in second place with 59 points.

Before we look at the betting breakdown and picks for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, check out the best sites for MotoGP betting and our picks for the 2024 MotoGP Championship.

Jorge Martin

Jorge Martin, who rides a Ducati for Prima Pramac Racing, has started the 2024 MotoGP season strong. Martin’s shaky start in 2023, when he failed to finish two of the first three races, was one of the reasons he finished second to Francesco Bagnaia in the overall standings. If Martin can remain as consistent as he has been in 2024, he could pick up his first MotoGP championship at the end of the 2024 season. Martin currently has a 31-point lead over Enea Bastianini, who is in second place in the standings. Maverick Vinales, who has never finished higher than third place at the end of the MotoGP season, is in the No. 3 spot with 56 points.

Martin has started two races in Spain In his first race, which came in 2022, he finished in 22nd place. Last year, Martin jumped up to the No. 4 spot in this race.

An aggressive rider, Martin finished 2023 with four Grand Prix victories, including three of the last nine races of the year. He started every grand prix in 2023 but had four races that he did not finish.

Francesco Bagnaia

The two-time MotoGP champion, Francesco Bagnaia, is in fifth place in the overall standings in 2024 with 50 points for the year. Bagnaia won the first race of 2024, but he failed to finish in Portugal. In Austin, the defending champ placed fifth. Bagnaia has been the dominant force in MotoGP over the past three years, winning two world titles and picking up 18 grand prix race victories. Look for him to come into this race confident, as he has performed well in Spain, winning in 2022 and 2023 and placing second in 2021.

Bagnaia’s retirement in Portugal marked the first time he did not place in the top three in a MotoGP race since he failed to finish the IndianOil Grand Prix of India in September 2023. Bagnaia had not had two worse finishes in back-to-back races since he placed 16th in Argentina in failed to finish the Grand Prix of the Americas in April 2023. The last time Bagnaia had three straight finishes outside the top four was in the early stages of the 2022 season when he placed 15th, fifth, fifth, and eighth.

Bagnaia rides for Ducati Lenovo.

Marc Marquez

Marc Marquez began the 2024 season with a new team. After 11 years with Honda, the 30-year-old is now on a Ducati for Gresini Racing. Marquez was dominant between 2013 and 2019, winning six world titles and placing third in 2015, the only year during that stretch when he failed to win the world championship. Things haven’t gone his way since then as he has only won three race wins in the past three years, and zero victories in 2022 and 2023. His best placing in 2023 was third in Japan.

Marquez performed well in the first race of 2024, placing fourth in Qatar. However he dropped to 16th in Portugal and was forced out of the race in Austin after an accident on the 10th lap. On the bright side, Marquez has won three times in Spain, picking up victories in 2014, 2018 and 2019. He did not race in Spain in 2023 because of injury. His most recent outing on the course came in 2022, when he finished in fourth.

As long as he is healthy, Marquez remains a threat to pick up a win.
