2024 World Seniors Championship

Can Jimmy White do it again?

Jimmy White (+350) will begin his title defense on day two with a match against Andrew Norman (+5000). While the 61-year-old hasn’t looked sharp on the main tour this season, he’s reached the finals at the last five world championships, winning three. The Whirlwind always seems to save his best snooker for the Crucible and his side of the draw looks slightly easier than Ken Dorsey’s.

Igor Figueiredo (+450), Michael Judge (+1000) and Tony Drago (+1200) look to be the top competition on White’s side of the 16-man bracket. However, the Championship’s competition format is ripe for upsets. The final 16 begins on Wednesday with best-of-five matches before escalating to best-of-seven showdowns in the quarter- and semi-finals. The tournament culminates on Sunday with a best-of-nine frames final.

Doherty favored to win

Ken Doherty (+225) is favored to win his first World Seniors Snooker Championship. He previously lost in the Finals to White back in 2020. The 54-year-old defeated his nemesis at the Seniors 900 in his home country of Ireland earlier this year.

Doherty shares the same half as Barry Pinches (+750), Dechawat Poomjaeng (+1400) and James Wattana (+1400). He’ll face Tyson Crinis (+20000) in his last 16 matchup.

Other notables

Igor Figueiredo (+450) is coming off a win at the Q Tour Americas event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 46-year-old previously won the 2018 WSF Seniors Championship and the 2019 Pan American Snooker Championship, with a runner up finish at the 2019 UK Seniors Championship.

Barry Pinches (+750) opens against former world champion Joe Johnson (+20000). The 53-year-old made the quarter-finals in 2021 and has a string of recent triumphs on the Q Tour.

Oddsmakers have given Michael Judge (+1000), Tony Drago (+1200), Dechawat Poomjaeng (+1400) and James Wattana (+1400) all a reasonable shot of winning their first World Seniors title.

Best Bet

Jimmy White (+350) has four World Seniors Championships, including three victories in the Crucible Theatre (2010, 2019, 2020). Not to mention five finals appearances in a row. Given that Doherty has never won this event, it’s hard to pick against the Whirlwind.
