C.J. Stroud captured Offensive Rookie of the Year last season after recording the third-most passing yards by a rookie in league history. Will No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams match Stroud’s numbers and become the savior of the Chicago Bears?

Offensive Rookie of the Year

Caleb opens as the favorite

Caleb Williams (+200) was viewed as a generational quarterback prospect coming out of USC. And the spotlight got even brighter last week when it was announced the Bears would be featured in HBO’s Hard Knocks series.

Chicago’s No. 1 overall pick has one of the nicest rookie setups in recent memory with D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen and fellow freshman Rome Odunze in his receiving corps.

Top OROY contenders

Jayden Daniels (+500) won the 2023 Heisman Trophy after passing for 3,812 yards and 40 TDs with LSU in 2023. With an additional 1,134 rushing yards and 10 TDs, his dual-threat ability is reminiscent of Washington’s last No. 2 overall pick, Robert Griffin III.

Marvin Harrison Jr. (+900) caught 155 passes for 2,613 yards and 31 touchdowns in three seasons with Ohio State. Wide receivers have claimed two of the past three OROY awards (Garrett Wilson – 2022, Ja’Marr Chase – 2021). The 2023 Biletnikoff Award winner should hit the ground running with Kyler Murray throwing him the rock.

Question marks all around

Bo Nix (+1200) will start the season under center for Denver after being picked No. 12 overall. While he has Sean Payton scheming the offense, the Broncos’ skill position talent is lacking. If J.J. McCarthy (+1400) wins the quarterback competition with Sam Darnold, his numbers will be buoyed by Justin Jefferson.

Malik Nabers (+1200) offers Tyreek Hill-like speed and explosion, but Daniel Jones is throwing him the ball. Keon Coleman (+1200) has nowhere near the same level of talent, but the big-bodied receiver has big-time TD potential with Josh Allen.

Sneaky longshot?

Michael Penix Jr. (+4000) will most likely ride the pine in his first year in Atlanta. But, what if the 35-year-old Kirk Cousins is slow to recover from his Achilles injury or goes down again? The Washington Huskies product could put up big numbers with Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts in Zac Robinson’s pass-friendly scheme.

Best Bet

Saquon Barkley was the last running back to win Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018. However, four RBs have captured the award in the last 11 seasons. Jonathon Brooks (+3300) was the first back off the board, 46th overall to Carolina, but we’d avoid that bet given the state of the Panthers’ offense.

Instead, make a longshot wager on Rams rookie Blake Corum (+5000), who ran for for 3,737 yards and 58 touchdowns in four seasons at Michigan. Sean McVay’s offensive system could pave the way for massive production if injury-prone Kyren Williams goes down again.
