  • Rory McIlroy withdrew from the field after choking away the U.S. Open on the final hole

Scottie Scheffler is one of the many big names competing at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. The world No. 1 is favored to win his first Travelers Championship despite his ugly performance at the U.S. Open last weekend.

Travelers Championship

Can Scheffler rebound?

Last week’s U.S. Open was the first time Scottie Scheffler (+425) placed outside the top 10 at a PGA tour event since January. Putting struggles ended the 27-year-old’s impressive run of 11 consecutive top-10 finishes, with five victories, as he made only four birdies in four rounds.

Scheffler finished T4 at The Travelers last year, and placed T13 in 2022, so he could pay off his favorite status.

TPC River Highlands

TPC River Highlands is a shorter course – a par 70 that plays less than 6,900 yards – with great crowds, making it a popular event with the pros. Over the last five seasons, the average winning score at The Travelers is better than 18-under par.

Interestingly enough, five of the last 13 editions of this tournament have been settled with playoff holes.

Top contenders at the Travelers

Xander Schauffele (+900) won this event in 2022. He tied for seventh at Pinehurst last week and recently secured his first major with a victory at the PGA Championship.

Collin Morikawa (+1200) has had a hot putter of late but he’s missed two cuts in three years at TPC River Highlands and has just one top-40 finish at TPC at Sawgrass, another Pete Dye-designed course.

Ludvig Aberg (+1500) led the US Open through 36 holes before eventually tying for 12th. On the tail end of a three-week stretch, the 24-year-old Swede should have more left in the tank than most players.

Best Longshots

Tony Finau (+3000) tied for third at Pinehurst after finally getting a handle on his putting. While a T-13 two years ago is his best-ever result at TPC River Highlands, the 34-year-old American has four straight finishes of T18 or better.

Corey Conners (+3500) has two top-10 finishes in his last three starts. Ranking third in ‘Strokes Gained: Approach’ and fourth in ‘Birdies or Better’ over the last 24 rounds, the Canadian could contend if his putter stays hot.
