  • Gabby Thomas (+100) is favored to win the women’s 200-meter race at the 2024 Paris Olympics
  • Shericka Jackson (+300) suffered an injury at the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in July
  • The women’s 200-meter competition will be held at the Stade de France in Paris from August 4 to 6, 2024

Gabby Thomas won the U.S. Olympic track & field team trials at 21.81 seconds. The 27-year-old American is the gold medal favorite over 2023 world champion Shericka Jackson of Jamaica.

Women’s 200m Gold Medal Winner

Gabby Thomas leads Team USA

Sha’Carri Richardson, the favorite in the women’s 100-meter final, failed to qualify in the 200m event. That leaves Gabby Thomas (+100) as Team USA’s best bet for gold. The 27-year-old Harvard grad won the Olympic trials in the 200 meters in 21.81secs, nearly a tenth of a second ahead of second place. Joining her on Team USA will be a couple of first-time Olympians in Brittany Brown (+900) and McKenzie Long (+650).

Thomas claimed silver at the 2023 World Championships last August and is the reigning Olympic bronze medalist.

Shericka Jackson of Jamaica

Shericka Jackson (+300) is a contender in both the 100m and 200m in Paris. The soon-to-be-three-time-Olympian took home the bronze medal in the 200m in Tokyo before winning gold at the 2023 World Championships. She’s responsible for three of the four fastest times ever run in the women’s 200.

However, the 30-year-old sprinter pulled up with an apparent injury at the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in July. The Jamaicans are already headed to Paris without Elaine Thompson-Herah. The two-time reigning Olympic champion at the 100 and 200 meters suffered a small tear in her Achilles tendon.

Britain’s best hope

Dina Asher-Smith (+500) aims to become the first British woman to win Olympic sprint gold in either the 100m or 200m. The former world 200m champion finished a disappointing seventh at the World Championships in Budapest last summer. However, after hiring a new coach, she’s peaking at the right moment.

The 28-year-old captured 100m European Championship gold in early June and set a new UK Athletics Championships record at the 200 at 22.18 seconds.

Julian Alfred in the mix?

Julian Alfred (+600) of St. Lucia equaled her season-best with a 22.16 to take the win at the Gyulai István Memorial in Hungary last week. While that time isn’t quite in Gabby Thomas’ league, she’ll certainly be in the mix for a medal in Paris.

Best Bet

Gabby Thomas’s season best time is almost four-tenths of a second faster than Jackson, Asher-Smith and Alfred. We’ll take the American to sprint to gold in the 200m this summer at +100.
