  • Both McLaren and Mercedes have significantly closed the gap with Red Bull this year
  • The 44-lap, 4.35-mile Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps hosts Round 14 of the F1 season on July 28, 2024

Max Verstappen’s triumph at last year’s Belgian Grand Prix gave him eight straight wins. Things are much more competitive in Formula One this season with six different drivers already securing victories.

2024 Belgian Grand Prix

Verstappen’s dominance waning?

Max Verstappen (-150) took a 84-point lead into last week’s Hungarian Grand Prix and is headed towards his fourth-straight drivers’ championship. However, the 26-year-old Dutchman has been far from unbeatable. Through the first 12 races of 2023, Verstappen had 10 wins. This year, he’s collected seven. Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton have all beaten him to the finish line in 2024.

Formula One’s newfound competitiveness is reflected in the constructor standings as well. After winning the title by 451 points last season, the team only had a 71-point lead on Ferrari and a 78-point cushion on McLaren heading into Budapest.

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

The Belgian Grand Prix will switch to a Sprint event in 2025, however, it’s business as usual this weekend. Max Verstappen grabbed the checkered flag at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps last year, finishing 20 seconds ahead of the next closest driver.

The 44-lap circuit is the longest on the F1 calendar at 4.35-miles. You could say that drivers love its mix of long straights and challenging fast corners because it allows them to push their cars’ capabilities. But that’s just another way of saying that the best car usually wins. After all, Verstappen has won three straight races in Belgium.

Other contenders

Lando Norris (+350) could have won at Silverstone if it wasn’t for errant pit strategy and Verstappen’s dangerous driving cost him his second victory of the year the week prior in Austria. Lewis Hamilton (+1000) ended a 56-race drought with his 104th career win at the British Grand Prix. He and teammate George Russell (+1000), who triumphed at Red Bull Ring a few weeks back, gave Mercedes back-to-back Ws for the first time since 2021.

Charles Leclerc (+2000) has a 11th, 14th and 16th in three of his past five races. The Monegasque driver just isn’t consistent enough to bet on.

Best Bet

Lando Norris (+350) has three runner-up finishes since picking up his first career victory in Miami. With Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps providing a fast track for McLaren, we think the 24-year-old Brit gets back in the winner’s circle this weekend.
