Mark Daigneault captured the award in 2023-24 after guiding Oklahoma City to 17 more victories than the previous year and Mike Brown grabbed the trophy in 2022-23 following Sacramento’s 18-win spike.

Jamahl Mosley (+900) and Joe Mazzulla (+900) are co-favorites to take home the trophy. The latter’s team won a league-best 64 games in the regular season before capturing the NBA championship. Meanwhile, Mosley has helped increase Orlando’s win total each season since taking over, leading a 12-game improvement to 34 in 2022-2023 to 47 last season.
The past 14 winners of the Coach of the Year boosted their previous season’s record by more than 11 wins on average. These award winners also exceeded their over/under win totals by an average of 12+ victories. Can the Magic really ascend to contender status with a 58-win campaign?

Other COY contenders
Both Nick Nurse (+1000) and Tom Thibodeau (+1000) have won this award in the past five seasons. Since Thibs just led the Knicks to a 50-win season, Nurse seems like the wiser wager. With Paul George joining Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the 76ers should post at least 10 more wins than last year.
JJ Redick (+1100) takes over a Lakers squad with a newly-extended Anthony Davis, an aging LeBron James and little else. It’s hard to see the former ESPN analyst coaching the Purple & Gold to many more wins than last season’s 47.
Best longshots on the board
Gregg Popovich (+1800) is a three-time Coach of the Year. With the emergence of Victor Wembanyama, the current favorite to claim Most Improved Player, could the 75-year-old, five-time NBA champion capture another COY as a lifetime achievement award?
Mike Budenholzer (+2200) won this award with his past two clubs, the Hawks in 2015 and Bucks in 2019. Coach Bud can score the hat-trick if Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal stay on the court together for a full season.

Best Bet
Taylor Jenkins (+1400) led the Grizzlies to consecutive 50-win seasons before last year’s 27-55 disaster. However, superstar guard Ja Morant played only nine games in 2023-24.
With Morant’s return and the continued development of Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson, Memphis could jump back up to 50 wins and a Western Conference playoff spot.
