2024 British Grand Prix

Verstappen and Norris collide

Headed for his eighth win of the season, Max Verstappen (-170) had a botched pit stop with 20 laps remaining in the Austrian Grand Prix. The mistake allowed Lando Norris (+250) to catch up, eventually leading to a lap 64 collision between F1’s two top drivers.

George Russell (+1600) took advantage of the collision to pick up his second-career victory. Mercedes has been much more competitive since upgrading their car prior to the Canadian Grand Prix. The 26-year-old British driver secured his first podium in Montreal and teammate Lewis Hamilton (+2000) placed third at the Spanish Grand Prix. Formula One’s seven-time champion has eight career wins at Silverstone.

Norris demands apology

Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for causing the collision that likely cost Norris his second win of the campaign. “If he says he did nothing wrong, then I lose a lot of respect for that,” said the McLaren driver following the race. “If he admits to being a bit stupid and running into me and just being a bit reckless in a way, then I’ll have a small amount of respect for it.”

While Norris was forced to withdraw, the three-time reigning champion finished fifth, helping extend his lead in the championship standings to 81 points.

Other contenders at Silverstone

Charles Leclerc (+2000) has been ice cold since his triumph in Monaco, placing off the podium in three-straight races. While the Ferrari driver damaged his front wing in the first lap in Austria, his teammate Carlos Sainz (+2500) scored a surprise third-place finish thanks to Verstappen and Norris’ collision.

Oscar Piastri (+1100) placed runner-up at Red Bull Ring. The 23-year-old Australian driver likely would’ve secured his first career GP victory if not for a mistake in qualifying that bumped him down from third to seventh on the grid.

Best Bet

Verstappen (-170) and Norris (+250) had finished 1-2 in five of six races entering the Austrian GP, with the Dutchman picking up four victories. However, Silverstone is Lando’s home track. He finished second behind Verstappen in 2023.

With more sparks sure to fly, we’ll pick Norris (+250) to take the checkered flag at the British Grand Prix.
