Lando Norris finished almost 23 seconds ahead of the pack at last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, handing Max Verstappen his first-ever defeat at the Zandvoort circuit. With nine races left in the season, can the 24-year-old Brit keep his foot on the gas pedal in Monza this Sunday?

2024 Italian Grand Prix

Norris or Verstappen?

Lando Norris (+110) secured his second-career win, crossing the finish line in the Netherlands with the largest margin of victory of the F1 season. Unfortunately, however, he’s still 70 points back of Max Verstappen (+250), who placed second. His first-ever loss on his hometown track at Zandvoort.

The reigning three-time champion has captured the past two Italian GPs, but he’s in the midst of his longest winless run since 2020. While Norris is unlikely to catch his rival in the drivers’ standings with only nine races remaining, his team has an excellent shot at the constructors’ championship. McLaren sits just 30 points back after outscoring Red Bull in six-straight races.

Autodromo Nazionale Monza

Autodromo Nazionale Monza has held the Italian GP every year but one since the F1 world championship started in 1950. Known as the ‘Temple of Speed’, the circuit is famous for long straights that enable drivers to go full throttle for roughly 80% of the lap.

There’s always a passionate Ferrari fanbase in Monza. That’s good news for Charles Leclerc (+1100), who in addition to winning the event in 2019, is coming off consecutive third-place finishes.

Other contenders

Oscar Piastri (+650) placed fourth at the Dutch GP after finishing ahead of his McLaren teammate in the previous two races. Prior to the summer hiatus, the 23-year-old Australian followed up his first-career GP win in Hungary with a second-place result at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Mercedes won three of four races heading into the summer break, but neither George Russell (+1600) or Lewis Hamilton (+1600) could maintain their momentum in Zandvoort, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Hamilton has five-career wins in Monza while his teammate placed third at the track in 2022.

Best Bet

McLaren clearly has the fastest car following its 22.896-second win in Holland on Sunday. We’ll take Norris (+110) at near even odds and hedge him with his teammate Piastri (+650) to cover our bases.
