The Kansas City Chiefs superfan who went on a spree of bank robberies and tried using gambling winnings to evade the authorities has gotten more than 17 years in prison for his transgressions.

Xavier Babudar, known online by his super fan moniker “ChiefsAholic,” was sentenced by a federal judge on Thursday in Missouri, the same day his beloved team played in the first game of the new NFL season. He previously admitted to carrying out 11 bank robberies in seven states and stealing almost $850,000, leading to the 17-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

The 30-year-old was popular on social media as he often went to Chiefs games in a wolf costume.

Babudar used his ill-gotten gains to travel to games across the country and to gamble. He received widespread attention when he won two $5,000 wagers on Patrick Mahomes winning Super Bowl MVP and the Chiefs taking home the Vince Lombardi Trophy, netting him $100,000 in total. He then went on the run from the authorities after collecting his betting winnings from Illinois’ Argosy Casino.

Babudar has to pay restitution of more than $532,000, as well as $10.8m in damages to a bank teller for the trauma he caused them by robbing their workplace at gunpoint.
