As discussions intensify around the proposed $500 million casino in New Haven, Indiana, Full House Resorts has revealed more details about the project’s location and development plans. Set to be built on a 65.5-acre lot at the intersection of South Doyle and Harper roads, the ambitious proposal seeks to create a first-class entertainment destination in northeastern Indiana, an area currently without any casinos.

Key features of the project:

The development, spearheaded by Full House Resorts, will be rolled out in two phases. According to Alex Stolyar, Chief Development Officer of Full House Resorts, the initial phase will focus on creating a premium gaming and dining experience. “Phase one, we would get the casino, the restaurants, nice speakeasy lounge, really just a high-quality sportsbook, high-quality first-class destination,” Stolyar stated, as reported by WANE 15.

The second phase of the project aims to add more features, including a luxury hotel, a live event center, and additional dining options. This broader vision for the venue emphasizes its potential to draw tourists and create a major entertainment hub in the region.

On September 23, a public meeting was held at the New Haven Community Center to discuss the casino proposal. The meeting saw a large turnout, with many residents eager to learn about the plans. While some in the community welcomed the potential economic boost, others voiced concerns about the impact on the local environment and public safety.

Many residents were shocked to hear about the proposed location, particularly in relation to road safety. One individual voiced his concerns by exclaiming that the intersection was already dangerous. In response, Full House Resorts assured the crowd that they would cover the costs of road improvements as part of the project, and the company clarified that these upgrades would be made without relying on tax abatements or credits.

Economic benefits vs. community concerns:

Full House Resorts made a detailed presentation outlining the expected benefits of the casino, which included job creation and increased tax revenue. However, some in the community raised moral objections, arguing that gambling could lead to “depravity” and negative social consequences for New Haven. Some residents were seen holding signs that read “No Casino,” expressing their opposition to legalized gambling in their town.

On the other hand, proponents of the casino argued that gambling already exists in New Haven through online platforms and church-sponsored games. According to WFFT TV, they emphasized that the facility would be for patrons 21 and over, with those supporting the proposal contending that individuals struggling with gambling issues should take responsibility for managing their own behavior.

While the project has garnered significant local attention, the final decision will rest with the state General Assembly, which must approve the proposal before it can move forward. Full House Resorts owns several casinos across the United States, including the Rising Star Casino in Indiana, which they plan to close due to increased competition in the region.

The proposed New Haven casino offers the promise of new economic opportunities, but it also brings challenges that will need to be addressed by both local officials and residents as the community debates the pros and cons of welcoming a large-scale gaming venue.
